What would Rome be like IF they had managed to make it to modern day civilization?

Which one, Western Rome or Eastern Rome?

The original Rome before it separated. But you can include both too.

That'd be really hard to say.
Pre-split Rome making it to modern day is an interesting concept, and if they continued to grow and expand at the rate they could've united - Europe would essentially be the United States of Rome, being another super power with vast resources to pool from and an exceptionally large amount of land. That or torn apart internally by politics, but hey, this is if they made it to modern day.
I see them as a highly militaristic, almost zealot-like warmongering country. I don't think their tradition would change as fast as modern day would dictate, and they would still be stuck in imperialistic mode. Great in wartime but with the threat of falling apart in peace - like Russia. War as an essential part of keeping the country running or risking collapse due to inability to manage peace after so long in conflict.

A good work of historical fiction that attempts to imagine a Roman Empire without a decline and fall is Gunpowder Empire, by Harry Turtledove. I highly recommend it.

Oo, I'll have to look into that.
